You just bought the home of your dreams and it's perfect! You can't wait to unpack your kitchen and bedrooms and get settled in. This is an exciting time! But before you get settled in, here are 4 important details you'll want to tend to first.
1. Get those locks changed
For the safety and security of your family, replace all the locks in your home. Even if you’re promised that new locks have been installed, you can never be too careful. It’s worth the money to have the peace of mind that comes with knowing that no one else has the keys to your home. For the DIYer, a quick search in YouTube for "change the locks" will take you to a fantastic blues/rock song by Lucinda Williams but won't help you actually change your locks so don't forget to add "how to". And for the non-DIYers, search Google for a local Locksmith.
2. Definitely steam clean the carpets
Unless every room has that unmistakable "new carpet smell", do yourself a favor and get those carpets deep cleaned. Whether the previous owners had pets, children, or just wore shoes, it’s good to get a fresh start with your floors before you start decorating. Not only will a good cleaning free your carpet of stains, but it removes lingering allergens like pet dander and pollen. For less than $100, your local Home Depot has steam cleaners you can rent. For a few hundred dollars, you can hire a professional from Angie's List, Facebook recommendations or ask your friends and family who they use. Ask them if they offer discounts or coupons to save a few bucks.
3. Call a pest control company
They can't do anything about your in-laws, but a good pest control company can keep the bugs at bay. Here in Houston, love bugs, mosquitoes, fire ants, sugar ants, and the much loathed cockroach & termite are just waiting to take over. Recently, we've even been invaded by these relatively harmless little blueberry shaped bugs that look super cute but are nonetheless invasive, and something called a kissing bug which is neither cute nor harmless. Even the most meticulous home owner finds the occasional cockroach scurrying across a kitchen or bathroom floor, so it's a good idea to get started with routine visits from a pest control company. They won't be able to do much about the love bugs or mosquitos or in-laws, but they can take care of just about everything else. Mine comes out quarterly and "as needed" in between for no extra charge and their solution is somehow fatal to bugs but safe for my dogs and cats.
4. Clean out the kitchen
Have you ever been to one of those Norwex rag demos where the presenter wipes a swab across a counter that looks clean but was just wiped with a raw chicken breast? The swab has a solution on it that changes color when it touches bacteria and of course when they rub the swab across the counter, it changes color. So then they wipe the same counter with the Norwex rag and use another swab to test the counter again ... and the swab stays white (no bacteria). This isn't a plug for Norwex rags (though I love mine for this very reason), rather it's a statement about not knowing what invisible icky things lurk inside the fridge, sink, counters and cabinets. So, wipe your kitchen down with your cleaning product of choice before you unpack those dishes and food.
The good news is, you can get all of this scheduled before your move in to occur on or near your first day in the home. And now you're ready to move in ... Welcome Home.
